John Thomas Abernathy

Bartow Herald (Cartersville, Georgia), March 22, 1928

On February 29, as gently as falls the petals from a rose, so did the spirit of Grandpa go back to God, who gave it. The parting was so sad, but all that loved ones and doctors could do was done, but all to no avail.

He had been sick about five weeks, of bronchial pneumonia, and loved ones were faithful to the end in their very diligent way, administering to our loved one every want and need.
Grandpa was always cheerful and had a kind word for all he came in contact with and his smiling face and gentle voice, is sadly missed in the name that has been made desolate by his going.

He was 77 years and eight months old, and had suffered severely. The glorious thought is our loss is Heaven's gain. But how we all loved him and we miss his smiling face.

He was a member and also pastor of Macedonia Church, and believed in a true and living God. He united with Primitive Baptist Church several years ago and took up the Cross of Jesus and followed in His foot-prints.

There was nothing he enjoyed better than to gather around the fireside and tell of the love of God and preaching sinners to turn to Christ. And how we all do miss him!

He made his home with Mrs. W.C. Blackburn till her last marriage to Mr. B.Z. Hight. About two years ago he moved with his daughter, Mrs. J.C. Parker, although he spent most of his time among the children.

Funeral services were held at Macedonia church with Elder W.E. Hembree officiating. His grace was a mound of beautiful flowers.
He is survived by thirteen children, four sons, Messrs. D.M., W.A., J.T. and R.B.
Abernathy. Nine daughters, Mrs. J.C. Parker, Mrs. Sam Cox, Mrs. W.N. Guyton, Mrs. J.S. Goddard, Mrs. B.Z. Hight, Mrs. E.I. Osborn, Mrs. Ed Bevins, Mrs. R.L. Jones, and Mrs. L.R. Summey.

Three bothers and one sister also survive. They are: W.R., E.T. and Bartow Abernathy and Mrs. J.M. Knight. Sixty-five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends mourn his death.

NOTES: His wife was Delphanie Ann Tidwell.
His sons are Daniel Marion, William Andrew, John Thomas, and Reuben Bartow.
His daughters are Mary Sarah (Parker), Ruthie Malinda (Cox), Fannie Idella (Guyton), Mary Margaret (Goddard), Nancy Catherine (Blackburn, Hight), Bertha Mae (Osborne), Minnie Jackson (Bivins), Martha Etta (Jones), and Nellie Emerline (Summey).
His brothers are William Robert, Elihue Tinsley, and Bartow Abernathy.
His sister is Eliza Jane Abernathy Knight.
