Say "Asbury Park" to many music fans, and the first thought likely to enter their mind will be Bruce Springsteen. Bruce took a standard postcard proclaiming "Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ" and made it the cover of his first Columbia released album, and it forever identified him with the seaside resort town on the Jersey shore. Bruce sang about the city and surrounding areas with such intimacy and detail that listeners all over the world felt as if they had walked the boardwalk, driven down Kingsley, and had their hearts broken on the backstreets of Jungleland. In this section of my site Beyond The Palace, I wanted to share the pictures I've taken during my visits there in 1984, 1985, and 1986, as well as photos from my return trip in 2000. As a teenager needing a "destination," it became my own private "Promised Land." As an adult in my 30s who has seen the reality of present day Asbury Park, it still remains a mythical place in my memories. I hope you enjoy this trip over the Jersey State Line. ~Zeny |
